Leonardo Vargas is a contemporary painter residing in Strasbourg, France since 2016. Graduating with a degree in history and theory of modern and contemporary art, he furthered his studies pursuing the Master of Fine Arts program from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in the Netherlands. Subsequently, he finished a doctoral thesis in visual arts at the University of Strasbourg.

His work stems from a diligent exploration of images sourced from a variety of media, including historical visual archives, fashion photography, art history, magazines, and the vast image expanses of the internet. It aims to create a visual experience focused on sensation, transcending the utilitarian nature of the image, and surpassing the automatic exercise of daily visual consumption.

Vargas delves into the possibilities of painting as an agent of visual transformation. He establishes a profound dialogue between image and the act of painting, questioning the technical achievements that unrealize the images he uses, in order to rediscover the human essence on them, even in its torn aspects. This ongoing dialogue propels his work into a realm of perpetual becoming, where the image is transformed and guided into unpredictable territories, often venturing into the unknown.
